How many US military bases are located in the Northeast US compared to the rest of the country?

Not including Washington DC, there seems to be a small number of military bases located in the NYC/ NJ metro, PA, and Northeast part of the US compared to the rest of the continental US. I’m wondering if this is because of increasing real estate prices or if the US military would rather train in warmer climates due to heating bills. Just a thought, not trying to make any points here.

Modern military bases need LOTS of room with few neighbors. The New England / Northeast has very little of that left that isn’t already a park or preserve; except in areas with really challenging winter weather. The various base closing regimes quickly chose most small bases and those that had been surrounded by non-military development.

I agree that most are now located in areas whose weather allows year-round training.
