Phoenix Suns Years – The Early
The Phoenix Suns are a team of basketball based in Phoenix, Arizona. They play in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Power January 22, 1968, new franchises in the NBA awarded to an ownership group from Phoenix and Milwaukee.
The main investors in the Phoenix franchise had close ties to Tucson, the second largest city in Arizona. They were:
• Richard Bloch, an officer in southern California investment / real estate developer and a resident of Tucson, former (no relation to the Richard Bloch, who was co-founder of the training provider of H & R Block).
• Karl Eller, owner of a leading outdoor advertising and an entrepreneurial leaders in the Phoenix area at the time. He was a football player at the University of Arizona;
• Donald Pitt, a lawyer based in Tucson;
• Don Diamond, Tucson-based real estate investors who eventually replaced Eller on team property management.
The four men were students at the University of Arizona. According to the history section of the Suns, other investors in the Suns includes prominent artists such as Andy Williams and Henry Mancini.
According to the site Suns, the original logo was designed by Stanley Fabe, owner of a printing plant in Tucson for $ 200.
New Suns hired former Chicago Bulls executive Jerry Colangelo to be general manager (he was 28 years old when he took the job). Colangelo in turn hired Johnny "Red" Kerr (as of this writing a broadcaster with the Bulls) to be the head coach of the Suns. Kerr was forced to resign amid of 1969-70, and Colangelo himself caused some games. Cotton Fitzsimmons replaced Colangelo as Suns coach for the 1970-71 season. He led the team to their first winning season with a record of 48-34 final.
Fitzsimmons returned to his position as head coach in the 1980s, would be very loved by Suns fans, a popular (and successful) as a coach, facilitator and executive with the Suns organization.
In the years 1970 the Suns had a moderate success, combining the talent of players such as Dick Van Arsdale (The Original Sun), his twin brother Tom Van Arsdale, Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins, Len "Truck" Robinson, Alvan Adams, and center Neal Walk. In 1976, the year the movie Rocky was released, the Suns took proved a real version of basketball's life Rocky. He finished the season with 42 victories and 40 defeats, but surprisingly they beat the reigning NBA Golden State Warriors in the playoffs and went to play the Boston Celtics in NBA Finals, giving the Celtics a tough battle before losing in 6 games. Game 5 was a triple-overtime classic that is considered by many as the best game in NBA history, with Suns forward Gar Heard ring a bell Shot Rainbow jump shots ( "The Shot") to send the contest to the third hour of overtime at Boston Garden.
In the 70 and early '80s, the Suns had several successful seasons, making the playoffs during 8 consecutive seasons. Problems arise, however, within and outside the court in the mid 80s. In 1987, the Office of the Attorney Maricopa County indicted 13 people in drug cases, including three have been active Suns (James Edwards, Jay Humphries and Grant Gondrezick). These indictments were partially based on testimony from star player Walter Davis, who was granted immunity. No defendants ever went to trial, two players went into a diversion program prosecution, others given bail. However, the scandal, although now perceived in many respects to a witch hunt, tarnished the reputation of the franchise nationally and within the community. The scandal led to an opening of Chief Colangelo to lead a group that bought the team from its owners for $ 44 million, a record at that time.
With a drug scandal and the loss of promising young center Nick Vanos, who died in the crash of Northwest Airlines Flight 255 after takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, the franchise was in turmoil on and off the court. Luck The Suns began to reverse in 1987, however, with the acquisition of the Cleveland Cavaliers of Kevin Johnson, Mark West and Tyrone Corbin for popular power forward Larry Nance. In 1988, Tom Chambers came to Seattle as an unrestricted free agent, the first in NBA history, Jeff Hornacek in 1986, a choice of second round has continued to develop, "Thunder" Dan Majerle was drafted with selection 14 in the draft, they got Cleveland in the trade of Johnson, Kevin and the team began a series of 13 years of playoffs. Kurt Rambis was added From the Charlotte Hornets in 1989 and the team (coach Fitzsimmons), in a shocking reversal, beat the Los Angeles Lakers in 5 games before falling to Portland Trail Blazers of the Western Conference Finals. In 1991, the Suns stormed to a 55-27 record but fell in the first round to Utah Jazz 3-1. In 1992, crossed the Suns to a record during the regular season 53-29. Although sent four players to All-Star the past two years (Chambers, Johnson, Hornacek and Majerle), the Suns were ready to make a serious career in the NBA Finals. They showed their ease, sweeping the San Antonio Spurs in 3 games. But once again the Suns fell in five games for the Trail Blazers in the semifinals conference, however, the series was interrupted by a play electrifying 4 in which the Suns lost in double overtime 153-151. The Suns were again denied a chance for a diploma, but in subsequent seasons enjoyed success again greater than ever before.
