Mortgages – any alternative to buy a house?

I took a quick look at how you could borrow to buy a house. Most mortgages work I had the reimbursement of 3 x what I paid! which is like a rip off. Are there other ways to finance a home purchase? I'd be a first time buyer has no means of obtaining a personal loan to get a loan so big. Please do not suggest partial purchase, plans to lease part, I am, but must still finance half buy.

It's not a rip off, and we must both make money. The mortgage is the best way to finance a purchase. The only way is better to get a little money in savings to offer a higher deposit.
