Stages can describe sound more like Marcia's theory of identity formation rather than Erikson. Marcia theory was based off Erikson's theory, but involves less steps. The diffusion of identity – the state in which the teenager has no sense of choice, he or she has done (not shop / willing to make) a commitment to identity foreclosure – the state in which the teenager seems willing to commit to some relevant roles, values and imprisonment for the future. Teens at this stage have not had an identity crisis.
